Recreation Center Improvement Project
Name: Buff Up the Rec
- Rec needs repair and renovation because it's crowded with half the space we need
-Workout space is uncomfortable and aesthetically unappealing
Why the need for more repair?
-Want to meet high student demand
-There's been a 20% increase in student enrollment which placed pressure on the existing facilities
-HVAC, swimming pool, roof, and gym floors are failing
-Ice rink needs repair
-Poor layout and multiple costumer service areas result in barriers to service and safety
-Long lines exist for equipment
Who Uses The Rec?
-88% full time, undergraduate students use the facility yearly
-Sees 4,000-5,000 users per day
-57% of CU respondents strength train and 55% train on cardiovascular equipment weekly
What Has Occurred?
- Students have conducted a study that was granted for approval by the Chancellor in 2009
-The Study
-An assessment of current facilities
-A comparison of national standards and regional competitors
-A review of survey data
-A discussion with recreational service staff and campus representatives to clarify and prioritize
facility and program needs
What the students want/recommend
-Provide state-of-the-art facilities, which are dedicated to student recreation and fitness
-Address existing deficiencies of indoor and outdoor facilities to be competitive within Colorado, our athletic conference (Pac10), and nationally
-expand building entry
-add 4 additional basketball courts
-add strength and conditioning square footage
-replace ice rink
-add multi-purpose gym to accommodate soccer, volleyball, other sports teams, and special events
-add climbing facilities
-add hard surface and mat room spaces for instruction, fitness, and multipurpose use
-replace swimming pool
-add/create a wellness hub for education and activities
-additional parking for convenience
-add 4 dedicated athletic fields
-add 4-6 lighted softball fields
-provide necessary storage
-replace tennis courts when necessary
